MBSR: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction
“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally”
–Jon Kabat-Zinn
Overview
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an 8-week program. Participants engage in intensive training in mindfulness meditation and movement practices in class and on a daily basis between sessions. MBSR is backed by 40 years of research demonstrating positive outcomes associated with increased self-awareness and emotional and attentional regulation. Research also demonstrates reductions in symptoms of anxiety, depression and chronic pain, along with positive changes in risk factors that may lead to more serious chronic conditions. Participants systematically work with the challenges of everyday life, learning to:
- Cope more effectively with stressful situations, responding rather than reacting
- Manage and often reduce physical and emotional discomfort
- Approach life with more composure, understanding and joy
- Be present and appreciate the simple pleasures of everyday life
