Guided Autobiography
“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.”
—Albert Camus
Overview
Guided Autobiography is a 12-week adventure in memory retrieval and storytelling. This is a mindful writing workshop open to anyone who wants to take stock of the experiential wisdom they have accumulated over the years, but doesn’t know where to begin. Each participant will write a 750-to-1000 word story each week on a progressive sequence of themes and, in the process, create a 8000-to-9000 word autobiography. The primary focus of the course is on the process of life review rather than on producing polished prose. Regardless of our perceived talent as writers, each of us has a story to tell. Class participants gather around an imaginary campfire each week to share their story nuggets orally and provide non-judgmental support and inspiration to each other. Cultivating the art of mindful listening is emphasized as much as the art of mindful writing. Participants develop a growing awareness of the common humanity in the various joys and sorrows they have experienced, as well as the obstacles they have overcome.
